How every child can thrive by five
How every child can thrive by five
"What if I was to tell you that a game of peek-a-boo could change the world?" asks seven-year-old Molly Wright, one of the youngest-ever TED speakers. Breaking down the research-backed ways parents and caregivers can support children's healthy brain development, Wright highlights the benefits of play on lifelong learning, behavior and well-being, sharing effective strategies to help all kids thrive by the age of five. She's joined onstage by one-year-old Ari and his dad, Amarjot, who help illustrate her big ideas about brain science.
More on serve-and-return
from the Harvard Center on the Developing Child
Serve-and-return interactions shape brain architecture. When an infant or young child babbles, gestures, or cries, and an adult responds appropriately with eye contact, words, or a hug, neural connections are built and strengthened in the child’s brain that support the development of communication and social skills. When caregivers are sensitive and responsive to a young child’s signals and needs, they provide an environment rich in serve and return experiences.
Key aspects of serve-and-return interactions:
- Responsive relationships are both expected and essential, their absence is a serious threat to a child’s development and well-being.
- The persistent absence of serve and return interaction acts as a “double whammy” for healthy development: not only does the brain not receive the positive stimulation it needs, but the body’s stress response is activated, flooding the developing brain with potentially harmful stress hormones.
- Building the capabilities of serve-and-return interactions with adult caregivers can help strengthen the environment of relationships essential to children’s lifelong learning, health, and behavior.
