What makes an effective student wellbeing program?
An effective student wellbeing program recognises that it takes a whole school community approach to something like managing anxiety. It needs an holistic approach, addressing the social, mental, and emotional aspects of development. The Anxiety Project and Resilience in Our Teens exemplify this approach, teaching students about their brain, where anxiety originates; and equips teachers and parents with evidence-based resilience building tools. The result is a unified approach to reduce student anxiety and build resilience.
Whilst schools do utilise the resources at hand, such as chaplains, school psychologists, and wellbeing programs; often strategies can fade out due to teacher time constraints and the ‘band aid’ nature of some of these approaches. Employing more staff such as chaplains, psychologists ad wellbeing professionals can also be challenging in this climate. This is where sustainability and effectiveness become pivotal. The Anxiety Project and Resilience in Our Teens, implement a ‘Theory of Change’ model. Emerging data shows that this method addresses the immediate needs by giving teachers the skills they require to identify and manage student anxiety and fosters long-term resilience thinking skills in students.
Developed by psychologists and educators with the latest research, the projects acknowledge teachers' time constraints and integrates proven techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This user-friendly approach empowers both educators and parents, making our programs distinctive and impactful in real-world educational settings.

Resilience in Our Teens is based on three underlying principles: first, by having an understanding of how anxiety develops teachers and teacher aides can counter its progress. Second, they can play a preventative role in stopping teenagers from worrying too much. Third, there are practical steps to take to build resilience thinking in teenagers.
The project has been developed by psychologists and educators with a foundation in the latest research with key factors to ensure sustainability and impact. These key factors include:
- Ensuring students, educators and parents are equip with cognitive behavioural therapy techniques that are easily implemented to build resilience.
- Theory of Change model to evaluate and map stakeholders' (students, educators & parents) responsibilities in creating a school culture change toward resilience.
- On-going support and resources from Parentshop.
- Specialised training for nominated in-school Resilience in Our Teens champions to support implementation.
- A parent program to empower students beyond the classroom.
Parentshop is working with 55 high schools to implement Resilience in Our Teens.

The Anxiety Project has been developed by psychologists and uses the following to provide sustainable anxiety management and resilience building outcomes:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy.
- Theory of Change (utilised by the UN).
- On-going support and resources.
- Education of children and significant adults including educators and parents to support a whole-school culture change toward resilience.
- Specialised training for in-school implementation coaches to guide carryout of the fit-for-purpose content.
- A parent program to empower students beyond the classroom.
Parentshop, in partnership with New South Wales Primary Principals' Association (NSWPPA) has developed a teacher and parent-led, fit for purpose intervention program that provides a whole of school community approach to address childhood anxiety in NSW schools. Through this program, participating schools create a network of schools to support each other to achieve better learning outcomes for NSW children.
The Anxiety Project is currently being implemented in 98 primary schools to great success.
