Why build social-emotional confidence?
Why should teachers support students’ social-emotional confidence? There's a few good reasons
from Education HQ
In the realm of education, the importance of academic confidence has long been acknowledged, but recent research underscores the significance of social-emotional confidence as well. This type of confidence pertains to students' belief in their ability to navigate social and emotional situations adeptly, such as expressing opinions respectfully or managing frustration during study sessions. A study published in Learning and Instruction explored this concept among 501 adolescent students, revealing a strong correlation between social-emotional confidence, well-being, and social-emotional skills. The research identified five key aspects of social-emotional confidence, including assertiveness and emotion regulation, which significantly influence students' overall sense of well-being and their ability to regulate their emotions effectively. Notably, the study also found that teaching practices characterized by autonomy support—where teachers consider and integrate students' perspectives—were associated with higher levels of social-emotional confidence among students. This suggests that fostering social-emotional confidence through supportive teaching methods is vital, particularly during adolescence when social-emotional skills can decline. The implications are clear: nurturing social-emotional confidence alongside academic skills is essential for students' holistic development and educational success. Therefore, integrating social and emotional learning programs and adopting autonomy-supportive teaching strategies should be prioritized in educational practice to cultivate a positive learning environment conducive to students' social-emotional growth and well-being.
Scientific evidence suggests that the secret to thriving students and a good education are amazing teachers.
