Q&A: Psychologist explains how to deal with anxiety in students

Q: What inspired The Anxiety Project?
A: In 2019, a survey by the Australian Primary Principals Association revealed that 81% of school principals identified childhood anxiety as a major issue, but 90% felt unprepared to handle it. The NSW Primary Principals Association, led by Phil Seymour, collaborated with us to address this at the school level.
Q: Why is childhood anxiety an issue?
A: Anxiety can worsen with age if not addressed. By age 11, about 7% of kids have an anxiety disorder, increasing to 18.4% by age 18 if untreated. Early intervention is key to helping kids manage stress and anxiety.
Q: How do adult interactions impact children's anxiety?
A: Anxiety can improve or worsen depending on adult responses. Adults often unintentionally reinforce anxiety by helping children avoid challenges. The Anxiety Project trains educators to guide kids through their anxiety, helping them build resilience rather than avoid difficult emotions.
Q: Does the program replace the role of parents?
A: No, it complements it. Parents also learn when to step back and allow their children to face challenges, teaching kids vital problem-solving and emotional management skills.
Q: What is The Anxiety Project's main message?
A: The project teaches educators to engage in "serve and return" conversations, where they challenge anxious thoughts compassionately but effectively. It also covers emotional literacy and problem-solving skills to help kids take control of their anxiety.
Q: How does the program function in schools?
A: A team of school leaders is trained first, followed by staff training. Teachers then teach anxiety management skills to students, with parental involvement through workshops. The program runs for two years, with ongoing support to ensure lasting impact.
